Campaigners say government spending cuts could impact the plan to build a massive new prison near Market Harborough.

New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has admitted ‘decisions of eye-watering difficulty’ lie ahead, after asking all government departments to review spending.

A Public Inquiry into the building of the 1700-inmate jail on land near HMP Gartree concluded this week – the Inspector will make recommendations to the Secretary of State later this year or in early 2023, as to whether Harborough District Council’s decision to refuse planning permission should be overturned.
