Coronavirus: Tuesday’s Local Updates

A Community Hub has been launched by Harborough Council to provide vital help and support to those in particular need during the Coronavirus crisis – click HERE for more details.

Harborough Police say they are patrolling to ensure criminals don’t take advantage of closed businesses during the Coronavirus pandemic.

In other areas shops, pubs and restaurants have been targeted by burglars.

Harborough Council’s announced the popular Classic Car Show in Market Harborough has been cancelled this year because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The event was set to take place in the town centre on July 5th.

Cllr Phil King, Leader of the Council, said: “We understand this event is a big part of the calendar for the district, and of great importance to businesses; but we have no option to postpone this in the interest of public safety. We will continue to do everything in our power to support local businesses affected by the disruption caused by COVID-19, and will look to bring the classic car show back to the district next year.”

The Council also cancelled at Farmer’s Markets on The Square until further notice.

That decision has been taken in-line with current government advice, with the authority adding its market staff are working hard to keep the food hall area of the indoor market ope,n and they cannot safely deliver both operations at the same time.

Community and charity groups across Harborough can now apply for a share of one million pounds to help them continue their vital work during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The emergency fund has been set-up by Leicestershire County Council with grants being offered to groups who have seen their finances dented because of the current situation.

They can apply for a maximum of £25,000 for support with core running costs, extra staff and equipment and other outgoings, like fuel for transport.

The council says such groups are providing life-line services to others at this time, and don’t want to see their viability threatened.
