A clean-up has taken place at St Mary’s Place in Market Harborough after concerns were raised about mounting rubbish and the risk of attracting vermin.
Although the shopping centre is privately run, Harborough District Council has stepped in to empty overflowing bins and clear away litter.

A large pile of black bags containing waste from retailers has also been removed from the service area.
The problems followed a recent change of ownership of the centre.
A council spokesperson said: “Although St Mary’s Place is not owned or managed by the council, we have stepped in to help by emptying bins and carrying out a litter pick to improve the appearance of the area. We are also in ongoing discussions with those responsible for the site to ensure these issues are addressed and a longer-term solution is put in place.”

A spokesperson for the landlord said they completed the acquisition of St Mary’s Place just seven days ago, and that there was an interim handover period as management responsibilities transferred.
They added: “Since taking ownership, we have been working closely with contractors to address operational matters. The bins have now been cleared and a regular waste management and maintenance programme is in place to ensure the area is kept clean, safe and well maintained.”
