Clarence Street One-Way Plan to Go Ahead Despite Concerns

A one-way system for Clarence Street in Market Harborough is set to go ahead despite concerns from some residents.

Highways bosses want traffic to travel northbound only on the narrow road, although some people argued vehicles should instead flow in the opposite direction.

Parked cars and two-way traffic have caused issues for years, with vehicles often mounting pavements and residents reporting damage to cars.

The scheme is part of a wider £1.9 million project, and Leicestershire County Council says it will initially be trialled for at least six months.

The wider project, due to begin in August, will also include upgrades along Rockingham Road to improve provision for cyclists and pedestrians.

This will include five new side-road priority crossings on raised coloured tables with illuminated road studs, at locations including the train station car park entrance, Halfords and PureGym retail park, Riverside, The Furlongs and Ashley Way.

There will also be a new traffic-signal controlled crossing near Aldi, and a new left-turn filter lane for motorists turning from Gores Lane onto Rockingham Road.

Work is expected to take until March 2027, with a break over the Christmas period.
