Local Charity’s Bid for Harborough Community Centre

A Market Harborough day centre under threat of closure could be saved for its existing users following a new bid to buy the building.

It comes from Market Harborough & The Bowdens Charity; which says it already has the necessary cash to purchase the Roman Way Community Centre.

However, Chair of the trustees, John Feavyour (pictured top right), says that is not their only consideration…

Trustees ALSO need to be sure the premises will continue to be well utilised by local voluntary and community groups – although the charity doesn’t actually need to make an income from them.

After deciding to sell the building, current owners Leicestershire County Council originally gave users including ‘Shopmobility Market Harborough’ until the end of this October to move out – threatening a total closure of this service for elderly and disabled shoppers. Last week the authority’s deadline was extended to 5th February 2024.

Arts organisation ‘Artshouse36’ is also known to be trying to raise the £2 million price tag for the building to create an ‘Arts Hub’ there.
