Campaigners Against New Prison To Hold Public Meeting

Written by on 5th July 2022

Campaigners against a massive new prison being built near Market Harborough are organising a public meeting as they step-up their fight.

Representatives from the ‘Say No To The Super Prison Campaign’ will detail their concerns and reveal more details about action planned to oppose the jail.

The campaign was re-ignited after the Ministry of Justice appealed Harborough District Council’s decision to refuse permission for the prison being built on land near HMP Gartree.

Concerns include building the prison in the countryside and the effect on traffic levels, with hundred of staff to be employed.

A spokesperson for the campaign group told HFM: “This will be the opportunity to share details on the timelines involved, ways to get involved, helping with the petition and more.

“We hope to have speakers from the various communities who will be able to expand on the negative impact that will be felt in the differing parts of the area and why it is important to stop the building of this Super Prison.”

A Planning Inspector will hold a Public Inquiry in October, before ruling if the prison can be built.

The public meeting will take place at 6.45pm on Friday July 15th at the Jubilee Hall of the Congregational Church in Market Harborough.
