Calls For Urgent Meeting Over On-Going Road Closure

Written by on 1st March 2024

There are calls for officials from Network Rail and Leicestershire County Council to meet traders impacted by an on-going road closure near Wistow.

Newton Lane should have re-opened to traffic today after being shut since last October, but is to remain shut for the foreseeable future.

Walk remains suspended on the bridge upgrade

Work to replace a bridge over railway was suspended last month because the council had not approved the final highway design.

It has not been revealed how long the closure of the road, which links Fleckney with Wigston, will have to extended for, although it will be at least until April 1st.

Businesses at the Wistow Rural Centre have experienced a big drop in trade because of the closure and that of another near-by road, which re-opened earlier this week.

Harborough MP Neil O’Brien is demanding the meeting and told HFM traders and drivers are fed up:

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We asked for the closure of Newton Lane to be extended to 1 April to give us more time to work together with Leicestershire County Council on our final plans for the bridge work.

“We hope to have our plans finalised soon and will be able to provide a date for the road to re-open shortly.”
