Call For Council To Ban Live Animal ‘Prizes’

Written by on 19th July 2023

A call is being made to ban live animals being used as prizes at events held on council land across Harborough.

Councillors will be asked to back the move in support of an RSPCA campaign, which is urging local councils nationwide to end the outdated practice over welfare concerns.

If supported it would mean events like fairgrounds on council land would no longer be able to giveaway goldfish in plastic bags, or any other animal.

The motion, to be considered at a meeting next week, also urges the council  to write to the government, urging an outright ban on animals being given as prizes.

It has been put forward by Cllr Jo Asher, who spoke to HFM:

The RSPCA is welcoming that the council is to consider the ban.
