Broken Streetlights Leaves Town Centre ‘Dark’

Safety concerns have been raised over the number of streetlights not working in Market Harborough town centre.

Nine of the aging sodium lights on the side of buildings in and around the High Street are broken, leaving some areas dark.

Sarah Hill told HFM she reported the broken lights to Leicestershire County Council after counting the number not working while walking to a restaurant:

A number of the aging lights have failed

The county council is planning to replace all the streetlights in the town centre with new energy-efficient LED technology, but has pledged to get the current ones working again as a temporary measure.

Councillor Ozzy O’Shea, county council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The lights in Market Harborough’s town centre are very old and we are looking into how we can upgrade these older lights to LED.

“However, whilst we are working on a longer-term modern energy efficient replacement, it is our intention to get the lights working again as a temporary measure.

“It is anticipated that the temporary measures will be in place and repairs completed during February 2024.”
