Bank Staff Prevent Frauds
Written by HFM News on 13th February 2019
A scheme between police, bank and Post Office staff has prevented people across Leicestershire being scammed out of more than £500,000 in a year.
The Banking Protocol trains them to spot when someone is about to fall victim by contacting the police immediately.
A number of potential fraud victims in Market Harborough have been protected, the most recent earlier this month, when an elderly woman asked to withdraw a large sum of money at a bank.
On further questioning, it emerged she had received a phone call from someone claiming to be a Police officer investigating fraudulent use of their account, and was asked to take out cash to be collected for inspection.
Police were contacted and confirmed it was a scam.
Pc Malc Roberts spoke to Hfm:
The average age of victims locally has been 67, showing how fraudsters are often targeting more elderly victims with these types of scams.
