The approval covers improvements to the exterior, including refurbishing the shopfront and repairing the windows.
The owners, The Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity, say they are delighted to have received permission and hope work will begin by the end of November.
The improvements form part of wider, multi-million-pound plans to transform the building into a community hub and café.
Those proposals are subject to a separate planning application.
