Over 400 Sign Petition Calling For River Welland Action

Written by on 3rd September 2026

People have told HFM they want action to improve the River Welland in Market Harborough, with more than 400 residents signing a petition calling for improvements.

The petition, entitled “Reinstate Our Beloved Rivers in Market Harborough”, was launched online by Philip Cotterill.

It claims the waterway has been badly neglected, with weeds covering large areas, and raises concerns about potential pollution.

These people in the town centre told HFM what they think:

Although the River Welland is not directly managed by Harborough District Council, the authority says it is working with partners to balance the appearance of the river with protecting biodiversity.

A spokesperson for the East Mercia Rivers Trust, which is responsible for elements of the river, said: “It’s truly heartening to see how much people care about their river.

“It is always difficult to find a balance between ecology, flood risk and aesthetics in a river highly constrained by the town around it, but as a charity, East Mercia Rivers Trust are just starting a project with Harborough District Council to work with stakeholders to see what improvements can be made.”

Improvements are planned for the stretch of the river through Welland Park.

District councillor Paul Bremner says any further work will need careful consideration, and that developer funding could help support further improvements:

A spokesperson for Harborough District Council said the authority remains committed to enhancing biodiversity across the district, highlighting work including wildflower and tree planting and habitat improvements.

The council says it also works with volunteers and local partners to support litter clearance and targeted riverbank maintenance.

It says the River Welland provides valuable habitat for wildlife including kingfishers, water voles, otters and eels.

The spokesperson added: “The council recognises that views on river management can differ and continues to work with partners to balance maintaining an attractive environment with supporting biodiversity, ensuring the River Welland remains a valued asset for residents and visitors.”

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said it is “absolutely committed” to improving the quality of the River Welland.

The agency says it has been given greater powers to protect water quality and resources, hold water companies and others to account, and ensure polluters pay.

It also says stronger penalties introduced by the Water (Special Measures) Act will help deter illegal behaviour and strengthen its ability to take enforcement action.
