Racist Graffiti Among Damage To Vehicles & Buildings in Market Harborough

Police are investigating after racist and offensive graffiti was among the daubings sprayed across parts of Market Harborough town centre.

The vandalism happened on Sunday evening and affected vehicles, buildings and pathways, particularly around the Commons Car Park.

A racist word was sprayed on the side of a parked classic car, while the outside of some shops and businesses were also targeted.

Harborough District Council has removed the offensive messages and is continuing the clean-up operation, while the mother of one boy said to have been involved has apologised and says her son will help clear the damage.

Logan Ward councillor David Page described the incident as a serious matter:

A Harborough District Council spokesperson said: “The council was made aware of this early yesterday morning (Monday 15 June). Our contractors have removed all offensive graffiti and will continue to remove all remaining graffiti on public property.”

The council added that some of the graffiti is on private property and officers will work with landowners to arrange its removal, as permission is required before any clean-up can take place.

Police enquiries into the incident are ongoing and a spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “We have received a report at 10.40am yesterday morning (Monday) in relation to graffiti which had been spray painted onto a car in a car park in Coventry Road, Market Harborough.

“The full circumstances of the report are being established.”
