Campaigners Fight Plan For 900 New Homes

A campaign has been launched to oppose plans for 900 new homes on the edge of a Harborough village.

Residents in Thurnby and Bushby say the proposed development south of Uppingham Road would put pressure on local services and worsen existing flooding issues, with more than 200 objections submitted so far.

The plans, submitted by Mulberry Developments, include a housing estate, a primary school and a local centre.

Locals, particularly those living in Wintersdale Road in nearby Thurnby Lodge, fear building on the land will increase surface water runoff into nearby streams, raising the risk of flooding.

Some say past flooding has left homes uninhabitable for months and a group of residents have hand-delivered their letters of concern to Adrian Eastwood, head of service development at Harborough District Council.

Melanie Wakley from Thurnby and Bushby Parish Council told HFM villagers are particularly concerned about the impact on traffic and the loss of surrounding countryside:

Harborough District Council, which will decide on the application, says residents’ views will form an important part of the decision-making process.

A spokesperson said: “The Lead Local Flood Authority has been consulted, and its advice will be considered. The representations from residents of Wintersdale Road and elsewhere shall also be an important part of the decision process.”

The proposal is expected to be considered later this summer.
