Residents Have Their Say on Proposed Town Council

People in Market Harborough are having their say on whether the town should have its own council.
A public consultation is underway ahead of a final decision.
Supporters say a town council would strengthen local representation, particularly with local government reorganisation on the horizon, which could see Market Harborough absorbed into a larger authority.
Darren Woodiwiss, a Market Harborough district councillor, supports the proposal and encourages residents to participate:
The idea of a town council was initially backed by the district council’s cabinet in July last year, but councillors chose not to pursue it at a full council meeting in October.
A campaign by the town’s four Neighbourhood Forums then gathered support from 7.5% of residents — the legal threshold required to trigger a Community Governance Review by Harborough District Council.
As part of the review, the council is consulting residents and will also hold a referendum in April to gauge public opinion on the proposal.
