Objections Submitted Over Clarence Street One-Way Plans

Residents have raised objections to plans to make Clarence Street in Market Harborough one-way to try to reduce congestion.

The proposals would see traffic flow northbound toward Albert Road, though some people argue it should go the other way, warning it could increase congestion at the Fernie Road/Great Bowden Road and Rockingham Road junction.

Nine formal objections have been submitted, and the public consultation remains open until Thursday, after which Leicestershire County Council will reach a final decision.

Two-way traffic on the narrow street has caused problems for several years and parked cars make it difficult for vehicles to pass.

Drivers are sometimes forced onto pavements and residents also report frequent damage to their vehicles.

The one-way system is intended to relieve congestion at the junction of Clarence Street, St Mary’s Road, and Kettering Road.

Traffic modelling suggests that without intervention, the junction will face severe delays as traffic levels rise.

A council spokesperson said: “Making Clarence Street one way northbound will help the St Mary’s Road/Clarence Street junction work more efficiently and supports the wider improvements planned along Rockingham Road. The junction generally operates well at the moment under the current traffic conditions; however, this step will help ensure traffic continues to flow efficiently into the future as the town continues to grow.

“We know some people are worried about what this might mean for the Fernie Road/Great Bowden Road junction. Our assessments so far show the impact is expected to be low and we’re already looking at what could be done as part of the wider transport improvements planned for the town.

“This is all part of a planned programme that we’re developing with Harborough District Council. We’re continuing to speak with residents, businesses and schools which includes the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) consultation (open until 19 February) for people to share their views.”
