MHBS Announces Branch Redevelopment Plans

Market Harborough Building Society has announced plans to redevelop its historic base in the town centre.

It wants to create four self-contained flats on the upper floors of Welland House on The Square and significantly expand the branch area on the ground floor.

A further apartment is planned for another area of the ground floor, along with the creation of space for community use.

The move is being proposed after MHBS’s head office staff relocated from the Grade II-listed building to a new headquarters on the edge of town last year.

The Society says the housing will have a social purpose and help to address some of the challenges around affordable accommodation in Market Harborough and its is committed to preserving the integrity of the building.

It adds the redesigned branch will offer a more flexible format and reflect MHBS’s ongoing commitment to evolve with members’ needs, through a strong and accessible local presence.

Tim Neal, Head of Footprint at MHBS said, “The redevelopment of Welland House is a bold and exciting step that strengthens our commitment to helping our members and local communities thrive.

“At a time when many banks are closing their doors, we’re bucking the trend and investing in a larger, more flexible branch designed around the needs of our members.

“Alongside plans to create socially purposed housing on the upper floors, this development is great news for Market Harborough and ensures that an iconic building continues to deliver lasting value to the town.”

A planning application for the redevelopment has been handed to Harborough District Council for consideration.
