Drivers Accused Of Flouting Construction Traffic Rules

Drivers of construction vehicles heading to and from the site of a new prison near Market Harborough have been accused of flouting rules.

There are claims they are travelling through the town centre, with one worker telling HFM he has seen a marked increase in the number of cement mixer and quarry-type vehicles using the High Street.

Drivers are supposed to use approved routes while en-route to and from the site at Gartree and not travel through the town.

The concerns have been echoed by Harborough District Councillor Jo Asher, who represents Lubenham Ward.

She hopes urgent enforcement action can be taken:

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “The new prison next to HMP Gartree is a key part of our plan to build 14,000 extra prison places to ensure there is always a cell for dangerous offenders.

“Construction traffic routes were agreed with both local councils and we work with our contractors to minimise disruption.

“We will continue to listen to and act on feedback from the local community.”
