Suggest Name For ‘Super Prison’

Written by on 2nd July 2025

You can now suggest a name for the new ‘super prison’ being built near Market Harborough.

The Ministry of Justice is inviting residents to come up with names that embrace the history and culture of the area.

The main construction of the £300m jail is set to begin in September, as groundworks continue on the site, adjacent to HMP Gartree.

When open, the Category B jail will house up to 1,700 male prisoners.

Groundworks are continuing ahead of construction work starting on the new jail

An MoJ spokesperson said: “We are pleased to launch a consultation with both stakeholders and the local community to find a new name for the prison, so it will have its own clear identity separate to HMP Gartree.

“It’s important that local culture and history is appropriately reflected in the choice of name and that we hear from those living close to the prison what they would like it to be called.”

A panel of representatives will decide on the best suggestion, before seeking approval from the Secretary of State for Justice and His Majesty the King.

Anyone can suggest a name by sending their suggestion via email (Subject line: Gartree Name) to psdenquiries@justice.gov.uk.

The deadline for suggestions is August 3rd.
