Streetlights To Be Upgraded After Safety Fears

Written by on 18th March 2025

Streetlights in Market Harborough town centre will be upgraded later this year.

It follows concerns about areas being left dark – including around The Square – because several of the existing ageing wall-mounted lights have not been working for over a year.

Leicestershire County Council, which previously admitted it did not have the money to resolve the issue, has now secured funding for the work which will cost up to £200,000.

The project will replace over 50 obsolete sodium-style streetlights on town centre streets with energy-efficient LED technology and be carried out this summer.

Cllr Phil Knowles, leader of Harborough District Council, has welcomed the announcement after calling for action over the issue:

A number of streetlights on The Square have not been working for over a year.

Cllr Ozzy O’Shea, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: “I’m pleased to confirm that funding has now been secured to upgrade street lighting in Market Harborough’s town centre.

“This important work is scheduled to begin in late summer and will last approximately five weeks.”

The work will include replacement of wall mounted lanterns, along with associated electrical cables and feeder pillars.

Sarah Hill first raised the issue in January 2024 and has been campaigning for action since:
