Councils Reveal Alternative Re-Organisation Plan

Leicestershire’s District and Borough Council leaders have announced alternative plans to shake-up local government.
They want to see the county split into two unitary authorities – one for South Leicestershire – encompassing areas currently served by Harborough, Blaby, Hinckley and Bosworth and Oadby and Wigston district and borough councils – and the other for North Leicestershire and Rutland.
Leicester City would make-up a third unitary authority based on its existing boundaries.
The leaders oppose the single unitary council plan being championed by Leicestershire County Council, saying it would be ‘too cumbersome, too remote and inaccessible for local communities.’
Cllr Phil Knowles, leader of Harborough District Council, spoke to HFM about the proposal:
The shake-up has been triggered by the government which wants to create bigger councils with the aim of devolving more power and funding to them.
Initial proposals for the reorganisation have to be submitted by the middle of next month and the councils say they will launch initial public engagement on their plan next week.
