Plea To Dog Owners After Sheep Killed

A plea has been issued to pet owners after a dog attacked and killed a sheep near Welford.

It happened in a field near the reservoir in the village and is thought to have involved a Doberman-type dog, being walked by two men and a woman.

Farmers say sheep worrying is becoming an increasing problem.

The attack in Welford happened between 1pm and 2pm on February 5th and is being investigated by Northamptonshire Police.

Rural Crime Sergeant Abigail Anstead said: “Whether farmer or pet owner, the death of an animal is devastating, but all of this is completely avoidable if people walking dogs keep them on a lead and under control around livestock.”

Sheep worrying is a criminal offence, and if found guilty, dog owners can be fined up or even jailed.

Farmers are also legally allowed to shoot dogs if they are harassing their livestock.
