Boost For Campaign To Save Harborough Community Centre

The campaign to save Roman Way Community Centre in Market Harborough has been given a boost after the building was registered as an Asset of Community Value.

Harborough District Council has granted the status following a successful application by a group who want to turn the building into an arts and creative hub.

The centre is set to close this autumn and be sold-off by Leicestershire County Council, which say it is underused and expensive to run.

With it now listed as an Asset of Community Value, the Arthouse 36 group will have to be given six months to raise funds in an attempt to buy the building, when it is put up for sale.

A spokesperson for Harborough District Council said: “Roman Way Community Centre in Market Harborough has been approved to be listed as an Asset of Community Value for a five-year period.

“The owner may seek a review of the decision by 1 October 2024. A written record of decision will be on the council’s website in due course.”

Current tenants based at the centre, including Shopmobility have been given notice to leave by October 31st and a search for alternative premises for the charity is continuing.
