MP Urges Rethink on New Prison

Written by on 9th July 2024

Harborough’s MP is urging the newly-elected Labour Government to scrap plans for a new prison at Gartree.

Neil O’Brien – who’s among just 121 Conservative candidates to win their seats in last Thursday’s General Election – says it’s not too late to move the gaol to a more suitable location.

Mr O’Brien told HFM he’s already written to Planning Minister, and deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner to ask her for an urgent rethink:

The leader of Harborough District Council, Phil Knowles, is welcoming the MP’s support.

Despite both the local planning authority and a Government planning inspector rejecting the application for Gartree 2, this refusal was overturned by the then Secretary of State, Michael Gove, who gave permission to proceed.

Cllr Knowles reveals he’d already sent a letter to the new Prime Minister, written over the weekend, which urges him to ‘call in’ the decision.

However, he says he’s pleased Mr O’Brien is also onboard….
