Council Assessing Scale Of Flooding Across Harborough

Written by on 3rd January 2024

Harborough District Council is working to ascertain how many properties experienced internal flooding yesterday.

The authority issued numerous sandbags to residents whose homes were at risk, but could not reach some areas due to roads being closed.

Cllr Darren Woodiwiss, cabinet member for Environmental and Climate Change, spoke to HFM:

Flooding in Welland Park

The council closed Welland Park in Market Harborough yesterday evening due to the scale of flooding –  it re-opened earlier today, but some parts including the play area remain underwater.

A council spokesperson told HFM: “To ensure the safety of the public we closed Welland Park last night due to concerns about river flooding.

“Areas of the park are now passable but there is still water remaining in places.

“We urge people to stay away from areas that are waterlogged including the play area which is closed. The council is carrying out footpath sweeping in the park today.”

“Sandbags were delivered to some properties in the Harborough district. In some cases, it was not possible to reach homes due to closure of roads by the police for safety reasons.

“We are working with partners to ascertain how many properties experienced internal flooding and to determine what support is required by residents.

“Information about how residents can prepare their homes and keep safe during flooding is at www.harborough.gov.uk/flooding”
