The government minister who approved a controversial new prison has turned down a request to meet the leader of Harborough District Council during a visit to the area tonight.

Michael Gove is attending a fundraising event organised by the Harborough Conservative Association and Cllr Phil Knowles had asked to speak with him.

The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities last month granted planning permission for the jail on land near Gartree Prison, overturning the council’s decision to refuse planning permisison.

In reply to a letter from Cllr Knowles requesting a meeting, Mr Gove said: “On 23 November, I granted planning permission for a Category B prison on land adjacent to HMP Gartree.

“My full reasoning is contained in the decision letter, alongside the Inspector’s Report.

“I cannot discuss or elaborate further on that reasoning, as to do so may prejudice any future decision which I may make in relation to this, particularly if the matter was referred to the Courts.

“As a consequence, I must politely decline your offer of a meeting.”

Cllr Knowles told HFM he is disappointed his request has been turned down:
