Respect Urged After Wreaths Damaged

People are being urged to respect the War Memorial in Market Harborough town centre.

Some wreaths laid at the Remembrance event were damaged during last Saturday’s Christmas lights switch-on, which attracted large crowds on The Square.

While it is believed the damage was not intentional, Harborough District Council is to discuss measures to ensure it does happen at future events.

Stewart Harrison is chairman of the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion and told HFM what happened has caused some upset:

Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council, said: “It’s sad to hear that wreaths on the memorial were damaged and seemingly during the Christmas lights switch-on. The memorial is much loved and greatly respected.

“I’m sure that the damage to the wreaths would have been accidental, during what was a very busy evening with a huge community turnout.

“It is important and appropriate to look at measures that can be taken to avoid this happening again.

“We will be meeting with the Royal British Legion to consider options and to do everything possible to ensure that this is not repeated at future events held in the town centre.”
