Demolition Work Begins Ahead Of New Homes Project

Work has begun to demolish bungalows at an elderly person’s housing site in Market Harborough ahead of new homes being built.

13 bungalows are being flattened at Naseby Square on the southern estate, to make way for the building of 38 new ‘affordable’ homes.

The £6m is being carried out housing association Platform, who say construction work will begin later this month.

The go-ahead for the scheme, first put forward by Harborough District Council , was given in 2021 despite major opposition over the loss of the existing homes, with over 800 people signing petitions against it.

The authority was also accused of paying over the odds when it spent £920,000 buying a bungalow in neighbouring Granville Street, so the land could be used in the re-development.

Residents whose homes are being demolished were re-housed by Platform and former councillor Roger Dunton told HFM he hopes they will be allowed to return if they wish:

Platform’s Director of Housing Operations, Marion Duffy told HFM: “Demolition is almost complete and our contractor will commence works following that.

“Throughout the process we have been keeping our customers informed of progress and the contractor has also held meetings with them to talk through the building process.

“We look forward to celebrating with a start on site event in late September.”
