Increasing Fears For Future Of Market Harborough’s Wilko

There are increasing fears for the future of Market Harborough’s Wilko store after a sale of the retailer fell through.
The GMB union says it has been told there is no hope that most of the business will be saved.
The discount homeware chain, which employs around 12,500 staff across 400 shops including in St Mary’s Place, collapsed into administration earlier this month.

In a statement, administrators PwC said: “While discussions continue with those interested in buying parts of the business, it’s clear that the nature of this interest is not focused on the whole group.
“Sadly, it is therefore likely that there will be redundancies and store closures in the future and it has today been necessary to update employee representatives.”
PwC said it understood the news would further add to uncertainty felt by workers and added it would be supporting staff.
It said that in the immediate term, all stores remain open and continue to trade, and staff would continue to be paid.
