Market Harborough Loses Another Bank Today
Written by HFM News on 28th July 2023
Market Harborough loses another bank today as Barclays shuts its doors for the final time.
The closure is being blamed on more people using on-line banking services, with just 22 customers regularly using the High Street branch as the only way to do their banking.
It the third bank closure in the town this year after NatWest and HSBC shut their branches, although Barclays will launch a ‘pop-up’ cashless service from the town’s Symington Building on Monday.

Barclays closes for the final time today
The bank closures have promoted calls for a ‘banking hub’ to be created to be created in the town centre, where customers of different banks which have closed can still access in-person services.
Harborough District Council is involved in talks to get such a facility set-up and Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of the Council, spoke to HFM:
A Barclays spokesperson said: “Our customers’ behaviour has changed significantly in recent years, with the majority now choosing online banking.
“This is reflected at Market Harborough branch, and as we adapt, we are finding new ways to support our customers by maintaining our community presence with options for customers who still require in-person support.
“On Monday 31st July, we will open a Barclays Local – a pop-up cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel.
“Barclays colleagues will be available 4 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10.30 – 13.00, 13.30 – 16.30) based at The Symington Building, Adam And Eve Street, Market Harborough LE16 7AG.”
