Concerns Over How Showground Event Was Communicated To Locals

Harborough’s MP has raised concerns about how a major event being held at Market Harborough Showground was communicated to residents and businesses.

Details about the Christian convention by the Light and Life Mission, which will run from Saturday until Thursday and could attract over 2000 people, only emerged at the start of the week.

The annual event for members of the Gipsy and Traveller community was held in Oakham in 2021 and anti-social behaviour from a minority attending has led to concerns being raised on social media that there could be similar disruption.

A number of pubs and hospitality venues in and around Market Harborough have announced they will be closed this weekend, some from tomorrow, to the disappointment of the event organisers.

Police say they have not advised any premises to shut, but have made them aware of the event, as extra people will be in the area.

MP Neil O’Brien spoke to HFM:

Harborough District Council say agencies were made aware of the event at the end of June/early July.

A spokesperson told HFM: “In the run up to the event, the organisers have been working with the showground itself and local agencies – including the council, Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and the highways department at Leicestershire County Council – to ensure that the event runs as safely and smoothly as possible.

“The showground is a private venue with private management. No licenses have been applied for or granted by Harborough District Council as there are no licensable activities at the event.”

John Boyd, one of the organisers of the event and Trustee of the Light and Life Mission, told HFM he is disappointed venues have decided to close:

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: “Police are aware of an annual Christian convention starting this weekend at the showground in Market Harborough and are in contact with the venue and local partner agencies.

“This is a private event but due to the increase in people in the area while it is taking place, police will be carrying out increased routine patrols.”
