Ticket Office At Market Harborough Railway Station Set To Close
Written by HFM News on 5th July 2023
The ticket office at Market Harborough Railway Station is set to shut after plans were announced for mass closures across the country.
East Midlands Railway says less than 5% of tickets are now sold at its ticket offices, with passengers instead using self-service machines or buying them on-line, and staff will move to station platforms and concourses.
But there are concerns the move will put older and vulnerable people off rail travel and unions say they will ‘vigorously oppose’ the plans.
A three-week consultation into the closure proposals has launched today and Steve Jones, chairman of Harborough Rail Users group, told HFM he wants assurances overall staffing levels will not be affected:

EMR say staff will remain at the station ‘for most trains’ if the closure goes ahead, with those working in the office transitioning to multi-skilled ‘customer help’ roles, where they would be better able to give advice about the best and cheapest fares, support customers with accessibility needs and to help passengers board and alight from trains.
The ticket office in Market Harborough is currently open between 6am and 7pm Monday to Saturday and from 8.30am until 7.30pm on Sundays.
