Fire Chief Condemns Attack On Crews In Lutterworth

Leicestershire’s Chief Fire Officer has condemned an attack on firefighters in Lutterworth.

Youths hurled rocks at crews sent to deal with a fire in Mere Lane on Sunday evening, causing damage to two fire engines.

Callum Faint has described what happened as ‘senseless and disgusting’ and says Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service will work with Police to bring charges against those responsible.

Crews from Lutterworth and Rugby fire stations had been mobilised to the fire, which turned out to be a ‘controlled burn,’ so no action was needed by them.

Mr Faint said: “While responding to a 999 call two fire engines were senselessly and disgustingly attacked by youths throwing rocks at the vehicles.

“Let me be clear – this is not ok and we will work with Leicestershire Police to bring charges.

“On this occasion no-one was injured but the vehicles were both damaged.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “At 9.15pm on Sunday (11 June) the fire service reported that stones had been thrown by youths while firefighters were attending a fire in Mere Lane, Lutterworth.

“It was reported that the stones had caused damage to a fire engine.

“Officers are speaking to those living in the area and are carrying out further enquiries into the incident.”
