Lorry Left Hanging Over Bridge At Catthorpe Interchange

A lorry was left hanging off a bridge after crashing into a barrier on the M1 in Leicestershire this morning.

It happened on the southbound carriageway at the Catthorpe Interchange just after 4.30am, with part of the safety barrier falling onto the A14 below.

The driver of the lorry was not injured and fire crews worked with recovery experts to pull the vehicle away from the edge of the bridge.

The M1 will be closed for several hours between junction 20 and 19, while repair work takes place and the A14 is shut at the interchange.

The link roads from the M6 south onto the A14 east and the A14 west onto the M6 north are also shut to traffic.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Police were called this morning (Monday 24 April) at 4.37am to a report of a collision involving a lorry on the M1 southbound carriageway at junction 19, the Catthorpe Interchange.

“It is reported the lorry has collided with the barrier leaving part of the vehicle and the barrier resting over the edge of the carriageway.

“The driver has safely left his vehicle and is not injured.

“The M1 southbound carriageway is closed at junction 19 as well as the A14 in both directions, which is situated under the M1, while emergency services respond at the scene.

“Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and avoid the area where possible while arrangements are made to remove the vehicle and ensure both roads are safe to be reopened.”
