Warning Issued After People Spotted On Frozen Water

Police have issued a warning about the dangers of going onto frozen water as the cold snap continues.

Both the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire forces received calls yesterday after groups of children and adults were spotted at locations across both areas, including Welford Reservoir.

They are urging people to keep away from frozen lakes, ponds or canals.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Today (Sunday) a small number of calls for concern have been received after people were seen on frozen water at locations across our force area.

“Going onto frozen water such as ponds and lakes is extremely dangerous. While the edges may make the frozen water appear safe, it rarely is. As you make your way to the edge, the ice tends to become thinner.

“Please be aware of the dangers and do not venture onto frozen bodies of water.”

Last month four children died in Solihull after falling through ice, sparking urgent warnings about the dangers of frozen water.

Northamptonshire Police said: “We have been receiving an increased amount of calls regarding children going on the ice at lakes in the Northamptonshire area.

“Please refrain from doing so as this is very dangerous and not only does it put yourself at risk, it puts others at risk.

If anyone is seen doing so please report to the emergency services at the earliest opportunity. Parents please speak to your children and educate them of the dangers.”
