Travellers Move Onto Car Park In Market Harborough

A group of travellers have moved onto an area of the Commons Car Park in Market Harborough town centre.

Around 10 caravans and other vehicles arrived last night and set up camp in the area opposite the Co-Op store.

Leicestershire Police have served the group a notice to leave the car park by noon tomorrow.

A spokesperson said: “Shortly after 8pm yesterday (Tuesday 1 November) a report was received of an encampment in The Commons car park, Market Harborough.

“Officers spoke to the group, who do not have permission to be on the site, last night.

“This morning (Wednesday) they have been served with notice to leave.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council told HFM: “The Multi-Agency Travellers Unit has just attended site, along with police who have served a Section 61 notice under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, requiring the travellers to vacate the site by 12noon tomorrow (3 November).

“The police will enforce this notice should it be necessary.”

A spokesperson for Harborough District Council, who own the car park, said: “The Travellers arrived last night and we understand some have now left.

“We are working with the Multi-agency Travellers Unit at Leicestershire County Council which has visited the site today and served a section 61 notice which requires the Travellers to move on within a given timeframe.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and are on stand-by for any clear up required.”
