‘Don’t Build Super Prison Here’ Harborough MP Tells Commons

Harborough’s MP has voiced his opposition to a new prison being built near Market Harborough in the House of Commons.

Neil O’Brien spoke after the Ministry of Justice challenged Harborough District Council’s decision to refuse permission for the 1700-inmate jail going up on land near Gartree Prison.
A Public Inquiry will take place in October to decide if the prison, which would be the size of about 17 football pitches, can be built.
Cllr Phil Knowles, who is helping campaign against the prison, has welcomed Mr O’Brien raising the issue in the Commons:
The ‘Say No To The Super Prison’ campaign group are holding a public meeting tonight (Friday) to discuss their concerns and plan of action.
It is taking place at the Jubilee Hall of the Congregational Church on Bowden Lane from 6.45pm.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “After careful consideration we are appealing the decision to refuse planning permission.
“We will continue to work closely with Harborough District Council and the local community on our proposals.”
