Concern Over Impact Massive New Prison Would Have On Neighbouring Villages

There is concern over the impact a massive new prison near Market Harborough would have on neighbouring villages.
Both Lubenham and Foxton Parish Councils are strongly opposing the 1700-inmate jail going up on land adjacent to the existing Gartree prison.
600 staff would be employed if it is given the go-ahead, in addition to 100 extra at the current prison, which could also be expanded.
Concerns include local roads not being able to cope and the new jail being an eye-sore in the countryside location.
Diana Cook, Chairman of Lubenham Parish Council, spoke to Hfm:

The Ministry of Justice has submitted a planning application for the new prison and an expansion of the current HMP Gartree to Harborough District Council.
People can comment on the plans, ahead of them being considered.
Lubenham resident Julie Kanjurs is always worried about the impact of increased traffic, including construction vehicles:
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson told Hfm: “We listened to the views of the local community before submitting a planning application and welcomed their comments.
“No final decisions have been made.”
