MP Welcomes Decision To Make Pet Theft A Criminal Offence

Written by on 3rd September 2021

Harborough MP Neil O’Brien has welcomed news that pet theft will be a criminal offence in England.

Under new laws, people who steel dogs and cats could be handed five years behind bars.

Previously, pets were classed as property, which ministers say didn’t take into account the severe emotional distress suffered by owners.

A number of dogs have been stolen across the Hfm Region in the past year, prompting major campaigns to find them.

Mr O’Brien, who has been campaigning for the offence to be made law, spoke to Hfm:

‘Rummy’ who was stolen in Derbyshire was found by Police in Market Harborough last month
