Bid To House Afghan Families In Harborough District Set To Move Forward
Written by HFM News on 2nd September 2021
Plans to relocate at least two refugee families from Afghanistan in the Harborough District are set to move forward next week.
The Council’s cabinet will be asked to formally back a government scheme, which is supporting the families of 5,000 people who worked with British forces and have been evacuated from the country.
The government will provide the funding needed to secure homes and support those who settle here.
A report to be considered by councillors reads: “The funding package for the Afghan Relocation Scheme is for 12 months and is £10,500 per person with additional payments for rent and cash support during the first 4 months or until receipt of benefits.
“The scheme protects the human rights of Afghan Locally Employed Staff who have supported the British Forces deployed in Afghanistan. They now risk persecution and death as British Forces withdraw from the country.”
The Harborough Helping Refugees group has contacted the Council to offer support when the families arrive and says it has been inundated with offers of help from the community.
Paula Alexander, founder of the group, spoke to Hfm:
