Alan Has The Licence To Donate & Save Lives!

Written by on 2nd September 2021

A Kibworth man has marked his 700th donation of blood platelets in style.

Alan White dressed up as James Bond and reversed the milestone figure to read ‘007’ during his latest visit to Birmingham Blood Centre.

Platelets are cells within the blood that are crucial for patients with blood cancers, such as leukaemia, and a range of illnesses and accidents.

Alan has been donating his blood platelets for the past 20 years and is encouraging others to do the same:

Alan’s milestone donation comes as blood donors in the Hfm Region are urged to make the switch from whole blood to platelets during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, as a new campaign by NHS Blood and Transplant launches to raise awareness of the importance of platelet donation in lifesaving cancer care.

Whole blood donors often graduate into platelets donation, particularly men because of their tendency to have bigger arm veins. Yet there is a lack of knowledge amongst whole blood donors surrounding this type of donation and the patient care it is used for.

Nearly 70% of platelet donations are used to help people with cancer.
