A man has been charged with arson after a fire at a flat in Market Harborough.

He was arrested following the blaze in the kitchen of the property on Ireton Road on Friday evening.

Andrew Parkhouse, 53, of Fawdon Place, West Chirton, North Shields, is also charged with assaulting three Police officers and a nurse at Leicester Royal Infirmary, after being taken there to be treated for the effects of inhaling smoke.

He is due to appear before Leicester Magistrates’ Court today.

Four fire crews, two from Leicestershire and two from Northamptonshire, were called to deal with the blaze at 7.14pm.

It caused damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the flat.

No-one else was injured.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service say an investigation into the blaze determined it was started deliberately.

Home fire safety checks have since been conducted at neighbouring properties and smoke alarms fitted.
