Lots Of Smoke….But Luckily No Fire At Harborough Jewellers

There was lots of smoke, but luckily no fire at a Market Harborough jewellers this morning.

Passers-by called 999 when they saw it billowing out of the door of Denhams, on the corner of The Square and Adam and Eve Street just after 10am.

The ‘smoke cloak’ anti-theft device had activated accidentally when a shop assistant opened up the store, filling it with smoke.

She had to take refuge in the staff room area, where there was less smoke, as the front door had locked from the inside, and she was unable to get out, until the arrival of firefighters from Market Harborough and Desborough.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said: “We had report of shop on fire and when we got there we realised it was the accidental activation of an internal ‘smoke cloak’ system.

“We were able to help a person inside the shop to get out.”
