Coronavirus – Local Updates

Harborough Police are praising the way most people are abiding by the government’s lock-down rules.

Officers have been conducting patrols reminding the public what they are and say they have been impressed with the social-distancing measures being taken.

Shops and supermarkets that remain open have implemented them, together with Harborough Market.

Meanwhile, Police are urging people not to call them with regard what they can and can’t do as a result of the government’s lock-down advice.

Both Leicestershire & Northamptonshire Police have seen a surge people contacting them over the past few days.

The forces are reiterating all the advice is listed on the government website and call handlers need to be able to deal with other incidents and emergencies.

Random Acts Of Kindness are being carried out locally during the pandemic.

The Co-Op on Leicester Road is the latest Market Harborough store to do its bit, by delivering free food and drink to officers at Market Harborough Police station and NHS workers at St Luke’s Hospital.

The supermarket’s staff say they want to show their support for the area’s key workers.

People using canal towpaths for their daily exercise in and around Market Harborough are being told to avoid stretches with boats moored against the tow-path, in a bid to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

The Canal and River Trust is also urging people to observe the government’s social distancing rules.

Harborough’s water supplier is urging vulnerable customers sign up to its Priority Service Register.

Severn Trent says that will ensure they get extra help in the event of any supply problems locally during the coronavirus pandemic.

Bin collections are continuing across Harborough, but the Council is urging people to wipe down bin handles before and after collection to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Building work on a new pub in Market Harborough has been stopped.

Brewery Marston’s says it has followed government advice is temporarily shutting down and securing the site, off Rockingham Road.

A new pub is being built to replace the Roebuck, which had to be demolished following a major fire last year.

A Market Harborough natural health centre is doing its bit  to help people during the current time.

Archway Health Hub on Lubenham Hill, which has been forced to close by Covid 19, is running a free mindfulness course online everyday.

A national salute is set to take place to honour the NHS staff working hard through the coronavirus outbreak.

In a gesture of appreciation to frontline medical personnel, people across the nation have been invited to join a mass round of applause from their doorsteps, windows and balconies this evening at 8pm.

Organisers of the “Clap For Carers” campaign – which started online – say it is being staged because “during these unprecedented times they [NHS staff] need to know we are grateful”.

The Wembley Arch, the Principality Stadium, the Royal Albert Hall and Lincoln Cathedral are said to be among some of the landmarks which are set to be lit up in blue during the salute.

It is part of the #lightitblue campaign which has been organised by members of the events and entertainment industry as a way to say thank you.
