Written by on 2nd January 2020

Rail fares for passengers in Market Harborough have gone up today.

Among the national increases for rail tickets across the country, East Midlands Railway has confirmed its fees will be going up for 2020 by 2.6%.

It stresses that this is still below the national average of 2.7%.

Steve Jones is Chairman of the Harborough Rail Users’ Group and gave his reaction to Hfm:

In a statement the company explains: “The Government set the fares for all regulated fares, which include season tickets, in line with July’s Retail Price Index (RPI).

“Nationally, the average fare rise is 2.7% – the third year in a row that train companies have held the average change across all fares below the July RPI rate of inflation, which regulated fares are pegged to.

“As well as paying for the running of the day-to-day rail network, fares are helping government to support the biggest investment in railway since Victorian times.

“This includes the Midland Main Line Upgrade, which is creating space for thousands more seats, quicker journeys and a simpler timetable from December 2020.”

Train services from Market Harborough continue to be replaced by buses until Saturday, due to engineering works.
