Controversial ‘Super-Council’ Plan Progresses

Controversial plans to scrap all of Leicestershire’s Borough and District Councils – including Harborough’s – and replace them with a new ‘super authority’ are progressing.

The County Council, which is leading the idea, and would also be abolished if it went ahead, has published its business case for the move, including an independent report, which recommends it goes ahead to save cash.

Harborough has already joined other councils in demanding the idea is dropped, citing the loss of local decision making as one reason.

It’s claimed the move could save taxpayers £30m a year, despite it cost around £13m to set-up the new Council.
