End Of Era As Travel Agent Shuts

Market Harborough’s branch of Thomas Cook closes today.

The travel firm has had a base in town for many years, latterly in St Mary’s Place.

The closure is especially sad, as the company’s founder lived in Market Harborough when he organised his first excursion back in 1841.

It was announced in March the branch is one of 21 branches being shut across the country as part of cost-cutting plans.

The company blamed hot summer weather for many holidaying in the UK last year – and issued a profit warning in November, when it revealed bookings for its winter package holidays were also down.

It’s not known how many jobs will be affected in Market Harborough by the closure, as Thomas Cook say some staff have been offered work opportunities at other branches.
