Campaign Launches To Save Post Office

A campaign is getting underway to save Market Harborough’s Town Centre Post Office.

Hfm revealed earlier this week the branch in St Mary’s Place could shut in April.

Harborough MP Neil O’Brien has written to the Chief Executive of the Post Office seeking an urgent meeting with him about the future of the service.

And Liberal Democrat councillors are set to launch a petition calling for the facility to remain in the town centre.

Harborough Council is also concerned the vital facility could close.

Deputy Leader Phil King told Hfm that losing it would be a big blow to Market Harborough:

The branch has been in St Mary’s Place for the past 25 year, currently in the GT News shop, although the sub postmaster is resigning.

Post Office bosses say they are working hard to maintain services in the middle of Harborough and are actively seeking business owners interested in running them in the current premises or elsewhere.

A Post Office spokesperson told Hfm: “We understand how important a Post Office is to a community and we would like to reassure customers that we are working hard to maintain a Post Office in that area.”

The James Retail Group, which owns GT News, has refused to comment.
