Work Begins To Restore Historic Bell Tower

Work is underway to restore the historic Bell Tower in Market Harborough’s Welland Park.

Specialists from town-based firm WW Brown and Sons have been drafted-in by Harborough District Council to carry out the work on the structure in the Rose Garden.

It involves the rotten wooden support being replaced with a metal structure, to ensure its viability for years to come, and the installation of new zinc roofing.

Work has begun on the restoration of the historic Bell Tower

The tower is nearly 150 years old and once stood at the top of the Symington’s Corset factory in Factory Lane, before being moved to the park following its demolition in 1973.

A Memorial Plaque detailing how the factory was used to produce parachutes for the Royal Air Force during WWII was attached to the tower in 1977, to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
