Welland Park tennis courts reopen after £81,000 refurbishment

Tennis players in Market Harborough are enjoying upgraded facilities after refurbishment work at Welland Park courts was completed.

More than £81,000 has been invested by Harborough District Council to resurface the courts and improve access and infrastructure, as part of a wider national programme aimed at improving community tennis facilities.

The courts remain free for public use and were officially relaunched at a community event on Sunday 21 June, which included coaching sessions, exhibition tennis and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

More than 50 local residents attended the relaunch, with participants ranging in age from four to over 70, highlighting the broad appeal of the newly refurbished facilities.

The courts were officially reopened by Harborough District Council Chairman Councillor Buddy Anderson, who delivered a speech and cut the ribbon. He was joined by representatives from the Lawn Tennis Association, Welland Park Tennis Club and council officers.

A special guest appearance was also made by former British No.1 wheelchair tennis player and Paralympian Jayant Mistry, who inspired attendees and supported activities during the event.

Following the opening ceremony, the courts were used for coaching challenges and family-friendly sessions designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to take part.

The refurbishment is part of a £81,717 investment funded by the UK Government and the Lawn Tennis Association through the national Park Tennis Project, aimed at improving access to high-quality community courts.

Organisers said it was fantastic to see so many residents come together to celebrate the reopening, adding that the relaunch marks an important step in encouraging more people across the district to take part in physical activity.
